With the coming of March, as the days grow long a different kind of wind begins to blow. Nature gradually wakens from its long slumber, and fragmentary memories of youth are called forth. This season truly is a time of “change.”
Today a special group meal was held to express the gratitude of the graduating sixth graders towards their teachers and fellow students, and I was able to join the children and share this pleasant time together with them. While drinking tea and eating delicious sandwiches made by the fifth and sixth graders, I was able to hear a few words of thanks and musical performances from the students. I spoke a few words in Japanese, but being a bit nervous about speaking in front of others, I’m afraid that I may not have been able to fully communicate my feelings. I teach only one day of the week here at the North Elementary, but the days I’ve spent here have left a deep impression on me. I am greatly look forward to the arrival of new students, and continuing to teach English to the graduating class as they move on to junior high school.
Actually, a normal student will usually follow a pattern of attending the same school from first through twelfth grade without any kind of graduation until they complete high school. Presents from the graduating class, words from the teachers, and performances from the students are all included in the final graduation ceremony. Of course, there generally no such things as entrance exams in US schools. And so, since coming to Japan I’ve noticed many difference’s between the two countries’ educational methods. There are both positives and negatives, but I feel that elementary pre-graduation events like those today, made to allow the students to graduate with many pleasant memories, are a wonderful thing indeed.
