皆さん、こんにちは、ジョンです。今年のハロウィンを楽しみましたか？ハロウィンがもう終わってしまいましたが、実は今日もある国にとってはとても大切な祭日なんです。メキシコやブラジルでは１１月２日のことは「ディアス・デ・ロス・ムエルトス」（死霊の日）と呼ばれています。なんか怖そうではありませんか？本当はそうでもありません。ハロウィンや日本のお盆の行事と同じく、死んだ親戚の霊を迎えたり、慰めたり、また見送ったりするお祝いです。頭蓋骨のお菓子や骸骨の仮面が、子どもたちにはもちろん、大人にも凄く人気があるようです。「パン・デ・ムエルト」（死のパン）という甘いパンがこの日に売られているし、パレードも沢山あります。亡くなった先祖もきっと楽しんでいるでしょう！
私の出身地のペンシルバニアではこういう「死霊の日」より、ハロウィンの方が人気がありますが、特にメキシコ系の人々には主な祭日なのでどんどん普及されているようですね。
ちなみに、「ディアス・デ・ロス・ムエルトス」という言葉は英語に訳すと「Day of the Dead」になります。「Day of the Dead」という映画があると知っていましたか？日本語のタイトルがなんとなく「死霊のえじき」になってしまいましたが、そのゾンビ映画の監督George A. Romeroが私のピッツバーグ大学の近くに住んでいます。ピッツバーグはゾンビ映画でとても有名です。出てくるかな？恐怖するがいい。。。クスクス
Hello everyone, this is John. Was this year’s Halloween fun? Halloween has already come and gone, but actually in certain countries today is a very important holiday. In countries like Mexico and Brazil, November 2 is known as “Dias de los Muertos” (Day of the Dead). That sounds kind of scary doesn’t it? Really it isn’t. Like Halloween, or Obon in Japan, this is a celebration where people welcome the spirits of dead relatives, comfort them, and then see them off again. Skull-shaped candy and skeleton masks are not only very popular with children, but with adults as well. There is a kind of sweet bread called “pan de muerto” (bread of the dead) that is sold, and there are lots of parades too. The ancestors who have passed away must surely be having fun too!
In my home state of Pennsylvania, Halloween is more popular than day of the dead, but for people of Mexican decent this is a very important holiday, and so it seems that it’s becoming more widespread.
Incidentally, “Dias de los Muertos” means “Day of the Dead” in English, and did you know that there is a film called “Day of the Dead?” In Japanese the title became「死霊のえじき」, but the director of this zombie movie, George A. Romero, lives near the University of Pittsburgh. Pittsburgh is very famous for zombie films. Perhaps they will appear? Be afraid . . . *evil laughter*
