Birthdays!

When you see cake, candles, and balloons, what do you think of? I think of birthdays!

Many of my friends had birthdays this week. What do you do for birthdays in Japan? In the U.S., different people have different traditions, but most people will hang out with a group of friends and have a small party. Kids love birthday parties! Sometimes entertainers come to birthday parties, like singers or clowns. I don't like clowns, though.

Many adults have birthday parties too, and they can be very small or very big. While kids usually have a party at their house, adults usually have a big dinner and sometimes do things afterwards. I will go to a few small parties this weekend. Tonight I'll be going to a Korean restaurant for one!

Besides birthday cake (my family always had ice cream cakes!), balloons, and the birthday song there are a few more common traditions. Lots of people like to have noisemakers for celebrations. Sometimes kids will hit a paper animal - called a pinata - with a bat until it breaks and candy falls out. I'm sure there are many other traditions, too. How about in Japan?

Enjoy your weekend, and I'll be back soon!
